This gugel is inspired by the Hundeshagen manuscript, namely the illumination called Arrival of Gunther and his companions in Iceland. This iluminated manuscript of the Song of the Nibelungs was written in the East-Swabian dialect in the time around 1440. It got its name after one of its owners, Bernhard Hundeshagen, who contributed to its restoration. Today it is preserved in the Royal Library in Berlin. More information...
Gugel after Hundeshagen’s Codex, 15th century
A gugel was a type of hood with a trailing point that exceeded the shoulders. It was almost exclusively worn by men and was usually made from wool or loden. Our Gugel after Hundeshagen’s Codex has visible stitching around the head opening and the dagging edges. They are is stitched by hand. The hood goes something over the shoulder-width by about 10 cm. The shape of the cowl is in comparison with other of our Gugels slightly narrower and longer. The dagging are of rectangular shape (about twice as long as wide). The hood is made of weather-resistant wool fabric (100% wool) of blue color. The natural-colored lining has slightly crude texture of authentic look.
The application of a wolf head on the chest can be substituted by another after your own template. But it can also be completely left out.
The Gugel sizes approximately correspond with the following head circumferences:
- S - 56-57cm
- M - 58-59cm
- L - 60-61cm
- XL - 62-63cm
