Pistol duels were not uncommon in the 19th century. According to modern estimates, about 25% of the nobles fought at least once in life from a duel. Frequently, but rather the form has been respected by z. B. in gun duels agreed conditions which made a wound rather unlikely, or even tried not to hit the enemy.

For a pistol duel, the parties would be placed back to back with loaded duel pistols in hand and walk a set number of paces, turn to face the opponent, and shoot. Typically, the graver the insult, the fewer the paces agreed upon. Alternatively, a pre-agreed length of ground would be measured out by the seconds and marked, often with swords stuck in the ground.
