Coifs date from the 10th century, but fell out of popularity with men in the 14th century. Coifs were worn by all classes in England and Scotland from the Middle Ages to the early seventeenth century. In medieval times and early modern times women wore coifs to show that they were married. Unmarried women were allowed to show themselves without any headdress. Even nowadays coifs are inherent part of many traditional costumes. More information...
