The purpose of the relatively narrow, but long and rigid blade is, but rather to cause the least possible externally visible damage, such as significant blood flow or significant (if possible deadly) internal injury. The stiletto thus makes it possible to kill rather inconspicuous, which favors the escape of the offender. Its very stable and pointy, but not sharp blade was ideally suited to penetrate chainmail and small cracks or gaps of a metal harness. Stilettos were sometimes worn by gunners, in order to make one's own gun to the enemy useless. For this purpose, the blade was rammed into the firing hole, and broken off.
