Roman Subarmalis Linen Armour Undergarment under Lorica Segmentata or Chain Mail

Today's reenactors confirm that wearing the armoured undergarment, called Subarmalis, protected the wearer from bruises and painful abrasions caused by prolonged wear or by blows. The subarmalis also helps to better distribute the weight of the shell, which rests on several parts of the body.

The padded subarmalis fulfills this protective function perfectly. It makes wearing the tank much more comfortable for the soldier. It is made of several layers of linen (there was also leather). If the subarmalis was quilted, it was probably stuffed with sheep's wool.

In murals and mosaics from this period, subarmalis can be seen peeking out from under armour, but no examples have survived. If you wear a subarmalis and wear a soldier's armour or armour and other equipment over it, you will probably be quite hot in it. However, the increased wearing comfort of the armour and the tank will far compensate for this inconvenience. See for yourself!

  • Subarmalis is available in sizes M, L, XL and XXL.
