Medieval Dress with Belt, Bliaut Konstanze, dark blue
The cut of the dress is typical of a bliaut (or bliaud) and is based on the fashion of the 11th to 13th centuries. While women's garments before this time tended to be loose-fitting and hid the shape of the body, clothing now became more body-hugging. The bliaut was originally a noble, courtly outer garment made of light fabrics and with wide, flared trumpet sleeves. This sleeve shape made it clear to everyone that you came from a higher class, as they were impractical for everyday work. Over time, however, this form of dress also became established among the middle classes, but then usually with narrow sleeves or with a knot in the sleeve hem. The bliaut was not only worn by women, men also wore this outer garment, albeit in a knee-length version.
The wide sleeves, fine fabrics and flared skirt are characteristic of the Bliaut. The trumpet sleeves sometimes took on exaggerated shapes and were sometimes even floor-length. The bliaut was usually combined with a veil and a belt.
Depictions of a bliaut from this period can be found, for example, in the fresco Sant'Elena in the Basilica of San Lorenzo in Milan and in the Hortus Deliciarum, an encyclopaedic work from the late 12th century.
