Roman Beneficiarius Lance

The beneficiarii are detectable since the first century AD, and fulfilled various tasks in the Roman Empire. Within the legions they were drafted from the Principales, the non-commissioned officers. Except of their normal service the beneficarii were stationed as some kind of road police on the external and important internal borders of the realm, where they, for example, controlled the movement of goods.
