Roman Lantern, Brass and Rawhide (Parchment)

This Roman lantern is based upon historical originals from around the 1st to 3rd centuries AD, some of which found in Pompeii, parts of England and what is now known as Libya. This later type of lamp primarily used olive oil as its fuel source and was predominantly manufactured in Italy. However, the style was sometimes copied by artisans across Britain and other parts of the world. More information...

Roman Lantern, Brass and Rawhide (Parchment)

Resting on three feet, the cylindrical frame of the lamp is made from brass. It consists of a solid base attached to two supporting vertical struts, which in turn are riveted to the upper body ring. A dome-shaped lid with ornate ventilation holes rests securely upon the upper ring via two notches in the lid's rim and is attached to the struts by means of chains. A dual-purpose brass handle suitable for carrying or hanging the lantern is attached to the lid by means of a third chain. The skeleton of the body is covered in genuine rawhide (parchment), which has further ventilation or pin holes that will also cast a unique soft and pleasantly warm glow.

Inside, the fully detachable oil repository is attached to the lantern base by means of a simple key. The repository is in three parts - main basin, wick holder and lid with air vents. But this finely made oil-fuelled lantern also offers other options for its light source: If you so desired, the wick holder and lid can both be removed totally, thus offering the option to insert a tea light or a larger candle as an alternate illumination source.

The lamp can be suspended, simply carried when outdoors or left resting upon its feet upon a table or a level surface, making it extremely versatile. At night, the lantern creates a beautiful atmosphere both indoors and outdoors.

Both decorative and functional, this handsome brass lantern is an ideal prop for Roman era re-enactment (either as part of living history or in a Roman camp) and larp. Whatever the setting, it will add perfectly to the overall authenticity and ambience of the activity you pursue. Of course, it is also a fine ornamental piece for your home or garden.

Please note:

This Roman lantern is a purely hand-crafted item. Each piece is thus a one-of-a-kind and above pictures are for reference only. Besides, as leather is a natural product, minor variations in colour and/or grain are quite normal. Such "imperfections" lend some authentic flair to the oil lamp and make each piece very unique.
