Goldsborough Fibula, Penannular Brooch
- Viking Fibula from Goldsborough made of brass
In 1859, a Viking hoard was discovered in the northern English village of Goldsborough (North Yorkshire). Among the finds were the original on which this fibula is modelled, as well as other brooch fragments and 39 coins dating from 700 to 1050 A.D. This hoard is one of the largest ever found in England and is now held at the British Museum in London.
The original ring fibula (also called penannular brooch or Celtic brooch) from the early Viking Age was made from silver. As the original had lost its pin, this nicely crafted brass replica was fitted with a pin patterned after another brooch from the same period.
