Leather Mount Viking Greiftier 44x40mm, set of 5

The decisive impetus for the development of the Oseberg style was the introduction of the so-called gripping animal, an unspecified animal-like creature whose forms were smoothly adapted to the respective requirements. The Viking Art Style of Broa (approx. 750 - 825 A.D.) leaves behind the then dominant animal forms with tendrils, such as the Bandtier from Irish and Anglo-Saxon influences, and also establishes the so-called Greiftier, an inexplicable animal that was not known outside of Scandinavia at the time, and therefore they were probably an invention of the Vikings. However, the abstract Bandtier, whose heads with round eyes, open hips, and intertwined ribbon-like limbs, still occurs. Greiftier dominates with his almost massive and "realistic" body, whose limbs almost always seem to reach into something, often a geometric frame in Broa's style. The overall appearance is usually symmetrical and the differences are only in the details.
