German Sallet Estienne, mid-15th century

Another way to create a new type of helmet in the early 15th century was to try to modify the shape of the back. In the 1530s the nape of some bascinets began to extend backwards to better protect the back of the head. This led to the creation of a new type of helmet - the so-called German sallet. It became one of the most widely used helmets in the second half of the 15th century throughout Central Europe and was also popular in other areas, particularly France. The sallet reliably protects the back of the head, the sides of the head and the face up to the level of the nose. The view is guaranteed by a visor at eye level. The improvement was the separation of the roof with a visor and its attachment to tenons. This is how the movable half visor came about.
