D-2 steel (1.2379)

D2 steel is a first-class, stainless knife steel with long edge retention and good sharpening properties. The designation D2 originally comes from the USA, in Germany this steel has the material number 1.2379.

Which knives is D2 steel suitable for?

D2 steel is best used for strong, robust outdoor knives and hunting knives. Due to its composition, the steel is not prone to blade chipping or even blade breakage with normal blade sharpening. The steel is stainless and has a very high Rockwell hardness. The edge retention is very high for stainless steels and above average compared to other stainless steels. Re-sharpening is relatively easy and is also possible for beginners with a little practice. A diamond disc or ceramic whetstone is recommended for sharpening.

Technical composition of D2 steel:

  • Carbon: 1.4-1.6 %
  • Manganese: 0.6 %
  • Chromium: 11-13 %
  • Nickel: 0.3 %
  • Vanadium: 1.0 %
  • Molybdenum: 0.7-1.2 %

What is the hardness of D2 steel?

With precise heat treatment, a hardness of up to 61 HRC can be achieved.

How do I care for knives made from D2 steel?

The blade should be rinsed with detergent (commercially available washing-up liquid) and then dried. Care with oil is not necessary in a dry environment. A thin layer of oil is recommended for protection and care in humid environments and for longer periods of storage.
