Hnefatafl is an asymmetric strategy board game for two players, where one player controls a small group of defenders with a king, and the other player commands a larger force of attackers.

Goal of the game:

  • Defenders: Escort the king to one of the corner squares of the board.
  • Attackers: Capture the king.

Rules:

  • The game is played on a board with a square grid (usually 7x7 squares).
  • Pieces move like the rook in chess (any number of unoccupied squares horizontally or vertically).
  • Pieces are captured by sandwiching them between two enemy pieces (or between an enemy piece and the edge of the board).
  • The king is captured by being surrounded on all four sides.
  • The corner squares and the central square are "strongholds" that only the king can enter.

Basic strategy:

  • Defenders: Protect the king and create an escape route to a corner.
  • Attackers: Surround the king and prevent him from escaping.

Hnefatafl is a game with simple rules but offers complex strategic possibilities. It is a game of encirclement, escape, and tactical maneuvering.
