In the Middle Ages, full plate armour was very expensive, so it was not for everyone. Simple soldiers such as foot soldiers and archers therefore had to equip themselves with simpler and cheaper pieces of armour. An example of such cheaper armour are these poleyns or knee armour, which protected the knee and the area above and below the knee with two lamellae each. The knee side and knee bend are protected by the leaf-shaped side plates. The poleyns are fastened to the legs with three leather straps with steel buckles. More information...

Knee Armour, Poleyns 15th century

This pair of Knee Armour consists of approx. 1.6 mm thick sheet metal. Each Knee consists of 5 segments, which are connected by loose rivet joints. They not only protect the knee, but also the a part of the shin and thigh. Each armored knee is strapped to the leg with three pairs of adjustable straps with iron buckles.
