This late medieval European winged swallowtail arrowhead (with two barbs) proved its worth on the battlefield and in hunting for centuries. When such a point hits a target and penetrates living tissue, it is very difficult to remove it from the wound channel. And so it usually only comes out again when the tissue is no longer alive. In addition to the leaf swallowtail arrowhead, the most frequently drawn form on historical depictions is the one with two barbs, which was used in war and hunting in the early Middle Ages. Its two barbs, also known as wings, ensured that the arrow did not come loose from the wound channel. In battle, it had the advantage that the iron tip remained in the wound and only the wooden shaft of the arrow was pulled out. This meant that the arrow was useless on the battlefield and could not be shot back at the enemy. And secondly, the steel arrowhead had to be painfully removed from the wound using cutting tools. Quite a few warriors received festering wounds as a result, which later led to septicaemia and the death of the wounded.
During the hunt, winged arrowheads should not fall out of the body of the prey and thus make it difficult to escape in the thicket.
