Ancient shoes

In ancient Greece and Rome, footwear was a very important part of clothing because it indicated the social status of its owner. The poorest, peasants and slaves, usually did not have any shoes or wore simple leather sandals. Leather sandals, consisting of a sole attached to the foot with leather straps, were worn at home. High shoes – calcei – were commonly worn outside. This type of footwear was worn by both men and women, differing only in color. The last type are heavy military boots called caligae.
