Drinking horns

Drinking Horns are horns from bovid animals and the first time they appeared was (what we know from archaeology) around 7th century BC. People drink from horns for more than 2 600 years. When anybody says Drinking Horn, a lot of people will see Vikings, but there were much more cultures that use them. For example Greeks, Romans, Persians or Celts and others.

Utilization

Drinking horns were used for celebrations and rituals of higher classes. Horns were also used for art and in the course of time was decorated with carved motives or metalwork. Cow horns are now waste, which will be normally burned, but we think it’s better to use them. At the moment cows losing their horns, cause they could hurt each other.

From Unpurified horns to drinking horn

Take these steps just orientational, cause every producer can have different methods. The first step is boiling horns in salty water minimaly 30 minutes. It this step is horn separating from bone and after this must be removed with a knife. When bone is out, horn must me again boiled in warm salt water.  This is for disinfection and elimination of the horrid smell.  After this are horns for some time a bit formable and coming through next cleaning.  After cleaning, producer straightening structure and equalize the bigger unevenness. Next step is with abrasive papers, first the grainy ones and then softer (outside and inside). Last step (if you don’t count art carving) is polishing with fleece and polishing paste. Drinking horns don’t need to be necessarily from horns, the could be from metal or glass. Now, you can have your own Drinking Horn, chose one and enjoy the greatest taste of mead, beer or just that what do you like.
