How to determine a helmet size correctly

How to determine a helmet size correctly
Please read the following information before you choose a size for an historic helmet. It is always unpleasant for both parties when the selected size does not fit on the first try and the helmet replica must be returned. This is especially true for orders outside the Czech Republic, where the shipping costs can be quite expensive. Please measure the measurements on the bare head without a hood etc. and please do not add any comfort allowance for the liner/padding etc.

Measuring Head Circumference right

 Kopfumfang

Wrap a flexible non-stretchable measuring tape loosely around the head just above the ears, approx. one inch above the eyebrows. This is usually the widest part.  Don't pull the tape too tightly; the helmet would fit that tightly. If you don't have a measuring tape, you can use a non-stretchy string. After you have marked the exact circumference, lie the string down on a flat surface and measure the length with a flat ruler or tape measure. If your head size between two sizes, always choose the bigger one.

Five significant head types were defined in a research of the Hohenstein Institute, in which about 6000 people took part: very round, round, normal, oval and extremely oval.

 Kopftypen

Our helmets in "standard sizes" are designed for the "normal" head type in the middle. If that is not your case, you should always choose a made-to-measure size and write us along the head circumference also its width and depth.

You can use a timber measuring caliper for this purpose. (Has anyone discovered a better method?). When ordering to measure, you can write us the desired internal dimensions of the helmet bowl. Sufficient is the width from ear to ear and depth from the forehead to the back of the head, measured at the bottom of the helmet bowl inside (widest part).

Considering a small "handcraft- tolerance", the helmet sizes correspond to the following dimensions:

Helmet sizeSMLXLXXL
Head circumference (cm) 56 58 60 62 64
Head circumference (inches) 22.05 22.83 22.62 24.41 25.2
Head width from ear to ear (cm) 16 17 18 19 20
Head depth from the forehead to the back of the head (cm) 19,5 20,5 21,5 23 24
Inner width of the helmet bowl (cm) 18 19 20 21 22
Inner depth of helmet bowl (cm) 21,5 22,5 23,5 25 26

Final note: This text refers to historical helmets that are manufactured in the Czech Republic. You can easily recognize them. In the product description is a link to this text and they can be ordered in custom size (selection: Size / made-to-measure). This text does not apply to any imported helmets such as those made by Marshal Historical, Hanwei, Deepeka, etc.

Error in your head size chart. 60cm is 23.62 inches, not 22.62.

Hello again. This is my second request for information. My first attempt at contact with you was last week around 29-30 December. I want to purchase a Secuto Gladiator helmet. My head circumference is 60-61 cm. I wanted to know th3 following : 1. How much size increase is required for a leather liner or a padded cap worn inside ? 2. I notice in your pictures that the finish is polished brass. Are other finishes available instead, such as dull brushed brass or antiqued verdigris finish ? 3. What would be the total cost in dollars U.S. including shipping from Europe to my ground address at 1984 Avoncrest Drive, Rochester Hills, Michigan, U.S.A. - 48309-2117 ? please respond, thanks - GF
