Round Ring Roman Lorica Hamata, Butted, 10 mm 16 gauge, Mild Steel, Zinc-Coated
This Lorica Hamata features the typical Roman cut – sleeveless, mid-thigh length, and the characteristic doubled shoulder panels edged with dark leather. The chest is again dominated by the ornate brass hook, used to fasten the shoulder sections. The armour itself is woven from 10mm round butted rings in the traditional 4-in-1 pattern. These rings are made from sturdy mild steel (16 gauge) and their surface is Zinc-Coated. This gives them a slightly brighter, more matt appearance compared to polished steel and, crucially, provides enhanced protection against corrosion. The model in the photo demonstrates how the armour fits over a tunic (tunic not included).
Key Features:
- Material: Butted rings (10mm diameter) made from mild steel (16 gauge).

- Details: Brass fastening at the chest, leather edging on the shoulders.

Who Wore the Lorica Hamata and When?
As previously mentioned, the Lorica Hamata was a real mainstay of the Roman army. Its design, inspired by Celtic examples, proved so effective that it was used by legionaries, auxiliary troops (auxilia), and cavalry for an incredibly long period – from the Republic era (e.g., the Punic Wars) right through the entire Imperial period. It was reliable and universal protection for a wide spectrum of soldiers across various conflicts, including the Gallic Wars under Caesar.
How Can You Use It Today?
- Historical Reenactment / LARP: A superb choice for beginners or as "working" armour that requires less upkeep. Suitable for portraying both Roman and Celtic characters.
- Stage and Film/TV: Functional and visually appropriate costume piece.
- Collecting: An interesting example of a functional replica with a modern treatment for enhanced longevity.
A Fascinating Historical Tidbit:
The longevity of the Lorica Hamata within the Roman military is remarkable. While other armour types (like the Lorica Segmentata) came in and out of fashion or were reserved for specific units, the Hamata remained a constant. This speaks volumes about its effectiveness, relative ease of manufacture and repair, and adaptability throughout the centuries.
How to Care for Your Armour:
The Zinc-Coated finish saves you a lot of rust-removal work, but a few principles are worth following:
- Keep it Dry: Even Zinc-Coated steel can eventually corrode, especially if the protective zinc layer is damaged. Always allow the armour to dry thoroughly after use.
- Cleanliness: Dirt and sweat can also contribute to corrosion. Wipe the armour down occasionally with a dry cloth.
- Check the Zinc Coating: Periodically inspect the Zinc-Coated layer for any significant damage (deep scratches, abrasions). Steel may begin to rust at these points. Minor damage can potentially be treated with "zinc spray".
- Oiling (Minimal): Unlike bare steel, regular oiling isn't essential. However, if storing it for long periods in a damp environment, a light coat of conservation oil won't hurt.
- Brass and Leather: Care for the brass fastening and leather edging as you would with other armour (brass cleaner, leather conditioner).
- Storage: Store in a dry, ventilated place, ideally hanging.
This Zinc-Coated Lorica Hamata is the perfect blend of history and practicality. You get the look of classic Roman armour with the added benefit of easier maintenance. It's the ideal companion for your adventures in reenactment or LARP. Don a piece of history that's ready for action!
